Hazelwood in for super challenge

- CONNOR O’BRIEN

FOR Super2 graduate Todd Hazelwood, the biggest change in stepping up to Supercars is the quality and intensity of the so-called strugglers.

After winning the 2017 second-tier series together, Hazelwood and Matt Stone Racing took the leap up to the main game.

Though he is making good impressions early, Hazelwood is 22nd out of 26 in the standings and knows it will be no easy task to move up the grid.

“The difference between Super2 and the main Virgin Australia Supercars Championship is definitely the intensity from the front of the field to the back of the field,” he said.

“It doesn’t matter if you are first or 20th, you are still racing just as hard and if anything, you are racing harder at the back because everyone really becomes desperate.

“It has been an eye-opener to experience that.”

The 22-year-old wants to stay out of trouble and learn more for now while his crew chips away at car development in the background.

Supercars head to Phillip Island for the next round on April 20-22.
