Five-eighth asked to fight for a deal

-

GARTH Brennan says Kane Elgey must continue to prove why he is worthy of a new contract at the Titans.

Off-contract Elgey has burst back to life in the past fortnight, helping the Titans to victories against the Broncos and Sea Eagles to get their season on track.

The five-eighth had a poor start to the year, punctuated by a deflating performance in the Gold Coast’s 46-point loss to St George-Illawarra.

However, Brennan, in his first year as coach, has shown faith in Elgey and he has started to repay that by forming an improving scrumbase alliance with halfback Ash Taylor.

Brennan said it was up to the off-contract players to prove they deserved a new deal.

“I don’t want to rush in and make decisions. I’m still getting to know them and they’re getting to know me,” he said.

“It’s up to them to show me how much they want to stay being a Titan and play the way I want to play. How much does that mean to them?”

Elgey, 24, said he wanted to see consistency from the local junior. “Kane’s going along really well,” he said. “He is showing some really good signs.”
