Bond crushes 763-day streak in win
THE fortress has been conquered.
In registering their first win of the season with a 20-19 scoreline, a gritty Bond University have crushed one of the longest running strangleholds in Queensland Premier Rugby.
Not since Round 1 of 2016 – some 763 days earlier – had defending champions University V1 - GCBE01Z01MA of Queensland lost on home turf at St Lucia.
The 16-match streak ended with Bond finally getting the better of a close contest on Saturday, having lost their opening two matches by margins of seven and five.
“It was 20-14 at halftime and the second half was just a big, hard slog,” said director of rugby Sean Hedger.
“They were camped on our
line for ages. I think we held them up over the line probably three times before they actually got over and scored to make it 20-19.”
From there, Bond got a stroke of luck as UQ skipper James Dalgleish missed a conversion attempt to snatch the lead. The result lifts Bond to equal fourth.
“The boys are really dirty at the moment; they think they should be sitting three and zero,” Hedger said.
