Plan for shock sessions to up tempo
SWIM stars Ariarne Titmus and Mitch Larkin are on “Code Red” alert for their August showdown against the Americans because a crazy 1am pool session could be sprung on them at any time.
As swim coaches go, Dean Boxall is the new-age Laurie Lawrence with his unconventional motivational ploys to stir even more from his crack squad of Commonwealth Games gold medallists for the Pan Pacs in Japan.
Recharged backstroke trump Larkin (five), distance dynamo Titmus (three), medley surprise Clyde Lewis and relay sprinter Jack Cartwright swooped on more gold medals (10) for Brisbane’s St Peters Western Swim Club than poor England (nine) in the pool.
It’s not by accident according to Lewis, who swam to the physical brink of “obliteration” when smashing his personal best by nearly four seconds for one of the most rousing of the 28 gold medals grabbed by the dominant Aussie swimmers.
“It’s like Dean wants to get in there and do it himself he’s so energetic and that separates him from a lot of other coaches,” Lewis said.
“The Code Red is coming and he’ll probably stitch us up with a huge session at 1am.”
Boxall’s style is perfectly tuned for a hardcore trainerracer like Titmus.
“I have a Code Red ... any day, any time, if I call, we’ve got an hour to meet at the Kangaroo Point cliffs (for a stair run) or St Peters late night or Chandler for a training session,” Boxall said.
