I’M SORRY: PETER BEATTIE AND HIS TRAIL OF APOLOGY

-

APRIL 16, 2018: Snubbing athletes in the closing ceremony: “We wanted athletes to be part of and enjoy the closing ceremony. However, having them come in to the stadium in the pre show meant the TV audience were not able to see the athletes enter the stadium, alongside flag bearers. We got that wrong. The speeches were too many and too long. I was part of that and I acknowledge it. Again, we got that wrong. It is very simple, I should not have spoken”.

APRIL 2018: When the Gold Coast became a ghost town: “We were worried about the traffic, of course we were. I think we probably did (go too far) and I accept responsibility for that.”

MARCH 2018: When Beattie — the new ARL Commission chairman — couldn’t name the Cronulla Sharks: “Yes I stuffed up the answer; just nervous in front of the great Phil Gould. Yeah I’m human. I had a mental blank. The price of doing the NRL & the Commonwealth Games at the same time.”

JULY 2007: The thenpremier told Queenslanders “noone would pay more for electricity” as he deregulated the electricity market. It was not until 2013 that Beattie admitted he got it wrong: “I thought what in the end would happen there would be cheaper prices. That was the advice from Treasury, but that didn’t happen.”

EARLY 2000s: He promised Queenslanders they’d get a vote on if they would drink recycled water, then changed his mind: “I apologise to the people of southeast Queensland for breaking a commitment, but that was in less serious circumstances.”
