Officer body slammed in street fight

- CHRIS MCMAHON

SHOCKING footage has emerged of a police officer punching on with an allegedly drunk man before being body slammed into the concrete in the heart of Surfers Paradise.

The vision shot over the Easter weekend was uploaded to social media last week and shows a man calling on police to fight him in Cavill Ave.

When an officer attempts to take him on, the man, who appears to be a trained fighter, throws a number of punches and takes the officer to the ground, before three more police officers join the melee.

The police will allege the drunk man was shadow boxing in the mall, trying to call people on to fight him. When he had no takers and after police tried to talk him down, they attempted to use pepper spray, although windy conditions rendered the spray useless.

“(Then) the officer had to go hands on and he fell to the ground with that bloke and the other officers jumped in and he was arrested,” Gold Coast Chief Superintendent Marty Mickelson said, adding the policeman was not seriously injured. The man was charged with assault police and public nuisance.
