THRILLER WITH STAR POWER SETS SCENE

- SUZANNE SIMONOT suzanne.simonot@news.com.au

RACHAEL Blake and Vince Colosimo walked the red carpet last night when their latest project, The Second,

became the first film to screen at this year’s Gold Coast Film Festival (GCFF).

The festival swung into action at Home of the Arts last night with the Australian premiere of the Queenslandshot psychological thriller about a novelist and her publisher.

Blake, who starred alongside Colosimo in the Aussie classic Lantana, said she was drawn to The Second

by its creative team and their plans to shoot the film quickly – and the fact it was a lowbudget project.

“I like working like that,” Blake said. “Often there’s really exciting stuff happening in the smaller budget arenas because you can take risks and those risks go through every department – camera can take a risk, costume can take risks – and that for me is kind of fuel.

“So when I saw the script and the guys behind it and found out the way they wanted to shoot it – 21 days, that’s pretty quick for a film – it was like, yeah I’m on board.”

Blake and Colosimo joined The Second director Mairi Cameron, writer Stephen Lance and producer Leanne Tonkes for a Q & A last night.

A Screen Queensland and Stan Original Feature Film, The Second heralds the start of 13 days of films and workshops as part of this year’s 16th annual GCFF. See hota.com.au/ goldcoast-film-festival
