Jail after robber slept in spare room

- LEA EMERY

AN elderly woman was terrified when she woke to find a robber asleep in the spare bedroom of her Surfers Paradise unit yesterday morning.

Shannon Leigh Mulcahy had ransacked her home and pocketed anxiety medication she kept in her bedside table.

Mulcahy, who appeared in Southport Magistrates Court yesterday, was jailed for 14 months for the robbery and will be released on parole on August 17.

Mulcahy pleaded guilty to burglary and two counts of possessing dangerous drugs.

He broke into the 75-yearold’s home between 10pm on Monday and 6am Tuesday, ransacking the unit in search for drugs. The woman woke up to find her place a mess and Mulcahy asleep on the floor.

Defence lawyer Ashkan Tai, of Ashkan Tai Lawyers, said Mulcahy had a serious problem with drugs and as intoxicated during the break-in.

Magistrate Mark Howden said Mulcahy’s extensive criminal history meant he had to impose a custodial sentence.
