Squad’s really on a roll
ARMED with Commonwealth Games momentum, Rollers president Jimmy Williams has declared this season’s QBL squad “the most competitive team the Gold Coast has ever seen”.
With the state league season less than a fortnight away, Gold Coast are putting the finishing touches as they strive to re-emerge as a force in the competition.
After finishing 10th of 14 teams last season, the Rollers are talking tough ahead of their season-opener against Brisbane Capticals at The Southport School on April 29.
“We’ve really taken the time to put together the most competitive team that the Gold Coast has ever seen and we’re prouder than ever to be backing this year’s talent,” Williams said.
“On the back of the Boomers winning gold at the Commonwealth Games, and players like (Ben) Simmons continue to fly the Aussie flag in the NBA, it’s a really exciting time for basketball in Australia.
We’re starting to see this high-powered basketball spirit permeate the Gold Coast as we lead into this massive QBL season.
“We’re expecting big things from the Gold Coast Rollers team this year.”
Gold Coast City Regional Basketball Association general manager Joel McInnes said this year’s trials proved the Rollers are in great condition leading into their first game.
“The Rollers have had a terrific pre-season and unlike last year, which saw several key players out for the first few games, we have all hands on deck,” he said.
“The game between these longstanding rivals will be a great one for spectators and should not be missed.”
The QBL season, which is made up of 18 regular games plus the playoffs, runs until August.
