INTERSTATE RIVALRY THRIVING FOR SUPER W

-

SLEDGING, hair-pulling and a grating superiority complex have made the NSW women’s team easy to dislike for 15 Queenslanders fired up for Friday night revenge.

The inaugural grand final of rugby’s SuperW competition has the spice everyone loves to see in a traditional interstate clash from any sport, with cross-border passions boiling.

The misfiring Reds tumbled 18-0 to NSW when the teams met in the opening round on March 10 and they have been driven to avenge that defeat since. “NSW do act like they can come out and win every time,” Reds fullback Samantha Treherne said.

“We’re not going to let the mental game get on top of us because we’ll be meeting their fire with more of our own.” When Treherne struggled with her kicking and her potent running game was stymied, she copped condescending taps on the head and verbal niggle from the girls in blue.

“There was a bit of sledging and it disappointed me, not being able to push it aside and focus on my game as well I should have,” Treherne said. “You learn for next time. “We all have as a team because the girls were angry with the way we played and are hungry for the win this time.”
