EMERGING Gold Coast teen Will Markham is hoping to tap into the experience of some of Australian water polo’s biggest names as he builds his career CV.

Having stepped onto the representative stage at last year’s Sydney Youth Festival and Queensland State Titles, the 14-year-old from Molendinar has now been chosen in a preliminary Queensland under-16 squad for the Pan Pacific Youth Festival in New Zealand from July 7-17.

He is one of 22 players in the squad, which will be finalised on May 28 ahead of the biannual tournament in Auckland.

Supporting the state under-14, 16, 18 and 20 teams at the event will be Olympians Billy Miller, Rhys Howden and Kate Gynther.

“We sort of had an idea that I had a good chance of making (the squad) but because I’m playing up an age it’s a big achievement,” Will, a Trinity Lutheran College student, said.

Will adds to the growing list of Gold Coast talent able to nominate for the Bulletin’s Local Sports Star awards.

The Bulletin is on the lookout for kids who love their sport, great teams and the awesome coaches and volunteers who make it all possible.

With awards up for grabs at local, state and national levels, we’re celebrating the talents of our sporting community.
