Mostert keen to saddle up again
FOR Chaz Mostert, Ford’s announcement that they will bring the Mustang back to Supercars next year carried added meaning.
Mostert drives a Ford Mustang as his personal vehicle around the streets of the Gold Coast and was stoked to learn that he’ll soon be able to steer the same model on track for Tickford Racing.
“It’s good to finally see it happen. It’s awesome for the sport,” he said.
“It’s obviously one very good-looking car and it’s going to suit the series very well. I love the shape of it and love the look of it.
“They’re modern and tough so I’m looking forward to it being on the race track as well.”
The Mustang holds a special place in Australian motorsport history.
The model won five straight touring car championships in the 1960s and was driven at various times by legends including Allan Moffat and Dick Johnson.
“It’s cool to get back to a bit of heritage too, in the early touring car days as well there
was a bit of Ford Mustang in the series,” he said.
“It’s like old trends that come back in, so it’s going to be cool.”
With Holden teams dominating the Supercars season to date with their new ZB Commodore, Mostert said the introduction of the Mustang would be critical to the Blue Oval being a title force in 2019.
“The Holden has really hit the road running this year,” said the 26-year-old.
“This gives Ford another chance to homologate a new model and a new shape.
“I feel like the Mustang being a two-door type shape, it gives the aerodynamics probably a better balance than what we have with the FG X (Falcon). The FG X is a massive step from where we were with the FG though.
“Holden have done an awesome job with their car this year and we need to go up and beyond that next year.”
Looking to this weekend’s Phillip Island 500, Mostert and Tickford are confident of bouncing back from a “nightmare” round in Tasmania.
Mostert won the Sunday race in Phillip Island 12 months ago.
