MAKE-UP SPECIALIST IN BRUSH WITH FAME

- BRIANNA MORRIS-GRANT

WHEN Vania Stockwell started making up her friends into monsters and fairies, she never thought it would take her as far as it has.

Now the 27-year-old makeup artist is hitting the big league, making it into the Top 30 of the NYX FACE Awards Australia.

The competition, celebrating make-up as an art form, is a big step for Ms Stockwell, who said her passion for her work was thanks to her mother.

“At that time when you’re young, you can’t think of what you want to do, so she kind of pushed me into it,” she said.

“She actually did make-up herself at a young age and thought I should follow in her footsteps, but now I’ve become better than her.”

With her talents ranging from everyday wedding make-up through to the weird and the wonderful, the Gold Coast woman is willing to try anything to win.

Against 29 other hopefuls in the first challenge, Avante Garde, she said she was excited to show Australia what she could do.

“I guess the best part of it is that you can freely do your own thing, there are no rules in make-up,” she said.

“I guess the way they just say here’s the challenge, there’s no ‘you can’t do this, you can’t do that’, which is the best part.”

Public voting closes May 2 to decide the Top 15.

Those who complete the second challenge and enter the Top 6 will fly to Melbourne to film and compete in the finals.
