Seahawks’ style to match substance

QBL newcomers the Seahawks will bring a free spirit to their maiden campaign, insisting style will be just as important as substance with their women’s side.

The eyes of the state basketball league will be on the North Gold Coast franchise, who give away size on rivals but bring a trophy cabinet of success from the lower tier.

While realistic over their prospects when the season tips off on April 29, women’s coach Robert Sleaford knows the brand his side will deliver.

“We will be very competitive this season but most importantly we are looking to put on a good show for our sponsors and spectators,” said Sleaford, whose side added US import Leeza Burdgess.

“We are very lucky to have solid base in our team that has played their junior careers with Seahawks.”

After a decade of dominance in the third tier SBL, the Seahawks men impressed enough in preseason to raise hopes of matching QBL powerhouses Cairns, Townsville and Brisbane.

US-born signings Jerron Jamerson and Quinton Campbell are tipped to shine in the season-opener away to University of Sunshine Coast Rip on April 28.

“It’s been a long time coming, but the time is right for our program to step up (to QBL),” coach Ricardo Lawyer said.

“Our first wave of US college graduates are on their way home and now we have the platform for them to continue their playing careers.”

The first home game for the Seahawks is against Brisbane Capitals on Saturday May 5 at Runaway Bay Indoor Stadium.
