Nomad Suns find a slice of paradise at Brisbane ground

STEVEN May says he is confident of going to battle against Adelaide captain Taylor Walker this week despite potentially needing surgery on a finger he dislocated during Gold Coast’s QClash win over the Brisbane Lions.

The Suns co-captain was forced off the field in the third quarter of last night’s thrilling 11.10 (76) to 10.11 (71) victory over rivals the Lions after injuring his finger in a contest.

Gold Coast medical staff popped his finger back in to place and May returned to play out what Stuart Dew labelled his best game of the season so far.

“I picked up the ball, handballed it and looked at my finger and it was pointing at right angles,” May said.

“I knew it was out so I came off and saw the blood. I didn’t know where that was coming from and it was actually coming from under the finger.

“It is only a little gash, little fracture. It was fine once I got some pain killers and strapped it up.

“The doctors will have a look at it and see if it needs surgery but it will just be a stitch up.”

The key defender said he was confident of featuring in the Round 6 game in South Australia where he will have the task of shutting down Crows skipper Walker.

Walker responded to recent criticism to kick four goals in his side’s stirring 10point win over Sydney on Friday night and May’s presence is critical to hopes of an upset.

“You wouldn’t want to be missing with a finger,” May said.

“It was a big response from the captain (Walker). He is a proud man and is going to be happy on his home deck but me and Rory (Thompson) will work out a plan for him and (Josh) Jenkins.”

Gold Coast are 3-2 and only percentage is keeping them out of the top eight following a tight QClash performance that came down to the final kick of the game.

“I said to (Tom) Lynch that those are the sort of games we would lose in the past,” May said.

“When it comes to the crunch, I think we have matured a bit. The boys gritted their teeth and found a way.

“We battled hard and it was a flip of a coin in the end.”

Dew said May delivered for the team when needed.

“He was physical and desperate,” Dew said.
