Tate to query quarry zone
GOLD Coast Mayor Tom Tate has welcomed his council’s Court of Appeals win over Boral to stop a quarry going in at Reedy Creek.
Now he wants to change the area’s zoning so the community does not have to go through the drawn-out ordeal again.
Writing on his Facebook page from the UK, Cr Tate said he would push the State Government to withdrawn its Key Resources Area designation for the Reedy Creek area, which almost allowed Boral to build a 65-hectare quarry.
“To say I am delighted with the decision is an understatement,” Cr Tate wrote. “It was one of my first promises in the 2012 election campaign – to fight this inappropriate quarry in the Gold Coast Hinterland.”
On Friday, the Court of Appeals ruled in the council’s favour to scrap the project.
The proposal faced strong reaction from the Stop the Quarry group and numerous court appearances.
Boral told the Bulletin on Saturday that the court’s decision would affect the number of trucks on the M1 and about 300 workers on the Coast.
