Choose-a-date app

- ALISTER THOMSON alister.thomson@news.com.au

A GOLD Coaster and a Sydneysider have teamed up to solve that pesky issue of organising a first date.

The app Gold Coast resident Dave Holt and Cos Luccitti have developed – WeDate – seeks to get all those difficult issues out of the way before the date.

These are things such as who pays for the date, the logistics, meaning the venue or activity and the day and time. Mr Holt said rather than letting people figure all these issues out on their own, it was far easier for them to let an app do it for them.

We-Date, developed in Australia and launched to the market three weeks ago, already has 5000 users and is operating in the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne markets.

Mr Holt, whose background is in project management and sales, said he met Mr Luccitti at the gym.

“I had this idea and I knew he had done tech startups before and he had some funding for previous apps he had developed,” he said.

“I pitched him an idea for We-Date and he asked if I had a business partner. From there, it moved forward pretty quickly.”

Mr Holt said all the other apps were profile driven whereas We-Date was about going on dates.

“You post the type of date you want to experience. You choose from a list of trending venues and experiences. You say where you are going, who is paying, and you get to invite who you want.”

The venues and experiences are vast and include dinner at Justin Lane, barefoot bowls, standup paddleboarding and just about any other date you can think of.

“We have even got a work function and wedding on there,” Mr Holt said.

A year ago the pair received funding of $100,000 and six months later another $200,000 from venture capitalist Andy Grieg, founder and director of ACAC Innovation.

Mr Holt said they would monetise the app through charging venues to advertise with feature listings, and, in time, may start to charge users.
