Aiolos woes all in head

-

TRAINER Doug Roberts says Aiolos has the ability to be a Group 1 runner if he can overcome the mental demons that delayed the start to his career.

Aiolos won the Maiden Plate (1100m) at the Gold Coast on Saturday, kickstarting the career of a three-yearold gelding that Brisbanebased Roberts described as “foolproof but field-shy”.

The talented gelding ran in six trials over nearly a year leading in to his first-up win.

Roberts revealed Aiolos was knocked down in his second trial and has been battling to perform against other horses ever since.

“It put a bee in his bonnet from that day onwards,” he said. “He went from being a potentially top horse to a walker in one day.

“He has shown well above average ability at all times.

“Trackwork has never been a problem. If I put him up against the horse that ran second (Spring Time Love) he would have won by about eight lengths. That’s the sort of horse he is.”
