Upsets the best sign for comp
GRIFFITH University Colleges have edged Helensvale 16-15 in the best sign yet for the Gold Coast District Rugby Union competition.
The first three rounds, prior to the Commonwealth Games, were marred by a series of lopsided scorelines.
But in the game of the season thus far, the Knights and Hogs on Saturday showed it will at the very least be a tight battle at the top.
Just one try was scored in a match that featured eight penalty goals, with Colleges only landing the decisive blow in the final minutes courtesy of a long-range Tim Smith threepointer.
“Both teams are much improved so it is definitely going to be a close tussle this year, I think we have drawn them (defending premiers Surfers Paradise) in a bit,” said Knights coach Graham Herlihy.
Surfers made it 41 wins in a row by beating Palm Beach Currumbin 67-0 while Gold Coast Eagles defeated Coolangatta Tweed 38-5.
“We have definitely evolved,” said Eagles co-coach Jason North.
Meanwhile, Gold Coast Cyclones posted an impressive 54-26 win over NSW Far North Coast yesterday.
