Coombes shows class

-

THEY may not have won a senior ironman or ironwoman title but the Coast’s legacy is in good hands Mitchell Coombes coming through the ranks.

Coombes won the under-19 ironman in a dominant display in a tough Scarborough beach break to add an elusive Australian title to his world crown.

With the Aussies cancelled midway through last year’s meet due to the effects of ex Tropical Cyclone Debbie, Coombes did not get a chance to compete in the ironman but made the most of his chances this year, dominating the field despite getting hit by a wave at the start of the final board leg.

“That made me really nervous. I rolled and I could see (the chasers) right on my hip,” said Coombes, whose win puts him in the box seat for selection to the Australian youth team for the world championships later this year.
