GOLD Coast university student Hannah Keogh credits her filmmaking success to her mum.

The 20-year-old Bond University student is off to the Cannes Film Festival in France next month after impressing executives from an LA

production company with her short film Wheels of Fortune.

The former Assisi Catholic College student snagged the invite after working for Electric Entertainment for two weeks at the Berlin International Film Festival in February.

After starting out working in front of the camera, she decided that dreams of stardom just wasn’t for her.

From there, she began to write and develop an interest in creating her own stories, but said that it had been a long path to get to where she is now.

“Among my degree and film in general there have been a lot of sleepless nights. It’s not a nine-to-five job, there is so much that goes towards it,” she said, adding that the workload wasn’t the only problem she’s faced.

“Money can be a really big issue. As an independent filmmaker you’re always trying to find the funds.”

Hannah said that with her producer Sannnah Maclean they created something they were both “so proud of”.

“It is a dream come true. It is a quirky film and really just encapsulates fun.”

Wheels of Fortune is a teen drama about a paraplegic, selfconscious boy with two wheels of steel who can’t roll away from the truth.

The world is starting to see a big change for women in the film industry and Hannah said she hoped to be a part of that.

Hannah said if it wasn’t for her mother, she wouldn’t be where she is today.

“She is my No.1 fan and has backed me since day one — she is big part of this film too,” she said.

“Mum’s catering is off the chart, so our crew and actors never have to worry about bad food.”

Hannah’s advice to anyone wanting to break into the industry is “put your best foot forward” and “just go for it”.

“It’s such a cutthroat industry and if you want it bad enough — there’s endless possibilities.”
