GOLD MEDAL STANDARD
Cooling temperatures call for a smooth, fuller-flavoured ale and this Sydney brew really performs
YOU don’t have to be an athlete to go for gold, just a beer drinker with a specific taste.
I am not talking about certain mid-strength products, but rather a style of beer I think is a medal winner in so many ways. From Sydney-based brewer Endeavour comes Growers Golden Ale, a drop they take pride in selling as a preservative and additive-free beer. It’s refreshing to sample something different and while there are a few golden ales in the market, they aren’t always easy to find.
Endeavour, based in The Rocks in Sydney, also makes a flavoursome range of pales but for someone looking for a break from the pale IPA wave, this is worth trying.
This Golden Ale, as the name suggests, has a cloudy, rich golden colour with a light, white head. The nose presents rich malts with a hint of toffee and sweetness that is replicated in the taste.
It has good body and is very smooth, filling the mouth with malt flavour and a hint of caramel. There’s a good degree of bitterness in the aftertaste to cleanse the palate, drawing you back for more.
It isn’t what I would reach for as a big thirst quencher but it is very sessionable, easy to drink and, being all natural and preservative free, it’s a quality ale. At 4.5 per cent, it is a fullstrength beer and doesn’t sit heavily in the gut after a few, which some golden ales can do.
I think it is well suited for this time of year when the temperatures are started to cool, especially if you enjoy sitting back and chilling out.
Team it with a fruity curry or spice dish. It you are looking for a change, endeavour to track this drop down.
