BEST TEAM EFFORT NORTHCLIFF­E OPEN MALE SURF TEAM

The iPhone hadn’t been released the last time Northcliff­e tasted defeat in an open male surf team final. Lucas Allan and Bailey Armstrong combined with the Eckstein brothers to ensure the club continued a winning streak dating back more than 10 years.

THE YOUNG TALENT TIME AWARD ELLIE BEER, CURRUMBIN

Youngster Ellie Beer (pictured below, right) showed why she’ll be one to watch after producing a dominant display on the shores of Western Australia. She capped off a sensationa­l week with gold medal runs in the under-15 beach sprint and female beach relay finals.

BACK-TO- BACK-TO- BACK AWARD ELLA COATES, NORTHCLIFF­E

Ella Coates created her own personal slice of history when she raced to victory in the open female 2km beach run. It was the 23-year-old’s third consecutiv­e win, and fourth straight podium finish, in the gruelling event.

CELEBRATIO­N OF THE CARNIVAL CURRUMBIN MALE TAPLIN

It’s been four long decades since Currumbin last took out the Australian male taplin relay. The raw and emotional scenes of jubilation that followed their surprise win showed how much the title meant to everyone involved.

HEARTBREAK­ER AWARD BAILEY ARMSTRONG, NORTHCLIFF­E

After winning gold in the under-19 surf race, Bailey Armstrong looked set for a historic double when he led the field in the dying stages of the open final. However, just as he was approachin­g shore, a wave dragged the chasing pack back into contention and relegated him into fourth place.

THE OUT WITH A BANG AWARD BEC CREEDY, KURRAWA

Bec Creedy capped her 2018 season in style, winning silver in the open ironwoman final before promptly announcing her retirement from elite-level competitio­n. She departs on a high after a stellar career that yielded two Aussie ironwoman crowns.

THE DAYLIGHT SECOND AWARD NORTHCLIFF­E OPEN FEMALE DOUBLE SKI

Northcliff­e duo Georgia Laird and Danielle McKenzie showed their class when they teamed up to blitz the field and record a resounding win in the open female double ski final ahead of Alexandra Headland and Wanda.

THE BACK TO THE FUTURE AWARD GUY ANDREWS, TALLEBUDGE­RA

Guy Andrews won a maiden Australian ironman title 25 years ago and he wound back the clock on his way to a number of strong performanc­es in the masters competitio­n at the Aussies. Racing for Tallebudge­ra, Andrews claimed the 45-49 years ironman and had five other podium finishes.

ANOTHER NOTCH ON THE BELT AWARD BURLEIGH HEADS MOWBRAY PARK

The surf belt remains one of the most traditiona­l races in surf lifesaving. Burleigh Heads Mowbray Park made their presence felt, “belting” the competitio­n on their way to wins in the under-19 female and open male finals, and a third-place finish in the open female.

THE MASTERFUL AWARD CHRISTINA NICHOLLS, KURRAWA

Christina Nicholls mastered the surf and competitio­n in the 70plus years female division, taking out the beach flags and board race, before teaming up with clubmate Liz Crilly as the only competitor­s in the board rescue.
