The iPhone hadn’t been released the last time Northcliffe tasted defeat in an open male surf team final. Lucas Allan and Bailey Armstrong combined with the Eckstein brothers to ensure the club continued a winning streak dating back more than 10 years.

Youngster Ellie Beer (pictured below, right) showed why she’ll be one to watch after producing a dominant display on the shores of Western Australia. She capped off a sensational week with gold medal runs in the under-15 beach sprint and female beach relay finals.

Ella Coates created her own personal slice of history when she raced to victory in the open female 2km beach run. It was the 23-year-old’s third consecutive win, and fourth straight podium finish, in the gruelling event.

It’s been four long decades since Currumbin last took out the Australian male taplin relay. The raw and emotional scenes of jubilation that followed their surprise win showed how much the title meant to everyone involved.

After winning gold in the under-19 surf race, Bailey Armstrong looked set for a historic double when he led the field in the dying stages of the open final. However, just as he was approaching shore, a wave dragged the chasing pack back into contention and relegated him into fourth place.

Bec Creedy capped her 2018 season in style, winning silver in the open ironwoman final before promptly announcing her retirement from elite-level competition. She departs on a high after a stellar career that yielded two Aussie ironwoman crowns.
THE DAYLIGHT SECOND AWARD NORTHCLIFFE OPEN FEMALE DOUBLE SKI
Northcliffe duo Georgia Laird and Danielle McKenzie showed their class when they teamed up to blitz the field and record a resounding win in the open female double ski final ahead of Alexandra Headland and Wanda.
THE BACK TO THE FUTURE AWARD GUY ANDREWS, TALLEBUDGERA
Guy Andrews won a maiden Australian ironman title 25 years ago and he wound back the clock on his way to a number of strong performances in the masters competition at the Aussies. Racing for Tallebudgera, Andrews claimed the 45-49 years ironman and had five other podium finishes.
ANOTHER NOTCH ON THE BELT AWARD BURLEIGH HEADS MOWBRAY PARK
The surf belt remains one of the most traditional races in surf lifesaving. Burleigh Heads Mowbray Park made their presence felt, “belting” the competition on their way to wins in the under-19 female and open male finals, and a third-place finish in the open female.
THE MASTERFUL AWARD CHRISTINA NICHOLLS, KURRAWA
Christina Nicholls mastered the surf and competition in the 70plus years female division, taking out the beach flags and board race, before teaming up with clubmate Liz Crilly as the only competitors in the board rescue.
