SERVICE A FAMILY AFFAIR

- KIRSTIN PAYNE

STANDING hand-in-hand with her father on the Broadwater foreshore at dawn, six-year-old Aislin Walsh watched the sun rise over her first Anzac Day ceremony.

Despite her military stock, with both parents serving in the defence force, Aislin had never witnessed a commemoration of the legacy first hand.

Her father, Sargent David Walsh, who is based at Canungra, said it was important he share the day and pass on its meaning to his daughter.

“I also think it is good for Aislin to see how much the community cares about people in who have served,” Sgt Walsh said.

“She doesn’t often see me in my uniform.

“So this is sharing one aspect, the mateship of the military community both me and her mother are part of – that is important.”
