Coast’s superyacht flotilla flirts with Sydney

-

THE organiser of the Superyacht Rendezvous which brings $200 million of floating palaces to the Gold Coast annually is flirting with floating it off to Sydney.

Superyacht Rendezvous organiser Trenton Gay founded the weekend-long industry powwow at his Gold Coast City Marina a year ago and held the second there last weekend. But now he is eyeing Sydney or the North Queensland coastline for Rendezvous III next year.

Mr Gay said he wanted it in a spot better suited for ocean cruises and there had been little State Government support to keep it on the Gold Coast.

“We can do different things in different locations. For example Airlie Beach, we can get the boats out on the water. At Sydney Harbour we can do the same thing. Also, if you do it in the same place year after year it can get boring. After all, it is called the Australian Superyacht Rendezvous.

“If we do go down the path of moving it to different locations then every three years we might look at bringing it back to the Gold Coast.”

Mr Gay said there had been no State Government incentive to keep it here.

The Palaszczuk State Government is expected to launch its superyacht strategy for further developing the lucrative industry next month.
