DON’T DRIVE BIG NAMES FROM FIELD

- COMMENT TOM BOSWELL tom.boswell@news.com.au

BARRY Hall’s decision to shy away from grassroots football should be considered a warning to all those involved in the game at the local level.

There is a real risk of more former AFL players opting not to play in the QAFL, or any level.

I don’t blame them if they turn their back on any opportunities.

Many either just want to play the sport they love for a bit of fun and while some may have financial incentives to do so, the overriding opportunity to give back and help community clubs is what lures them to the field.

Who better to attract more families to attend local games than players who could inspire children to continue playing or take up the code?

The experience of players like Hall can also help lift the standard of players around him and across the competition as a result.

More spectators means more money being spent at clubs that are often run by tireless volunteers.

Hall’s bad-boy reputation at AFL level probably made him an easy target for some.

But fans and clubs could have a real opportunity to convince more former greats to play if a bit of respect for all players on the ground was shown.

Former Queensland and Australian rugby league prop Ben Hannant has so far enjoyed his return to footy at the Burleigh Bears with spectators showing respect.

Hopefully that continues.
