REMEMBER WHEN
Wednesday, August 28, 1968
IT has been almost 50 years but it seems many of the reasons tourists flock to the Gold Coast today are just the same as they were in 1968.
On August 28, 1968 the Gold Coast Bulletin quizzed travellers visiting the city from southern states about why they chose to visit the Glitter Strip and most had the same answer – the warm weather.
The survey followed the introduction of a Gold Coast promotion in New South Wales and Victoria and was aimed at seeing whether the campaign had been effective.
Overwhelmingly tourists said they had flocked to southeast Queensland for the warmer winter weather with Victorians Mr and Mrs Jupp saying they loved the Gold Coast.
“We are regular visitors and we come for the atmosphere and the warmth,” they said.
Sydney resident Mrs Jacobs agreed, saying it was always the city’s lovely weather that brought her up north.
And as is still the case now, tourists also came for the attractions with NSW residents Mrs and Mrs Williams saying: “We are regular visitors and love the Gold Coast for many reasons – the sun, the tourist attractions, the wonderful atmosphere of the place and the entertainment.
“We find the accommodation is cheaper than it is down our way.
“In fact, we would all like to live here.”
And while all were more than happy to say why they visited the Gold Coast, it seemed none had been influenced by an advertising campaign designed to promote the Coast, with most saying they had not seen or heard of it.
