GOLD COAST’S NEW $25M DINING PRECINCT

- KATHLEEN SKENE

WORK has started on the Gold Coast’s newest dining precinct, with a $25 million project under way at one of the city’s most popular shopping centres.

Harbour Town will expand to include an open-air plaza in front of Reading Cinemas, with new flooring, seating and an arbour added to the existing promenade.

The expansion will be open in time for the Christmas rush, with managers saying new outlets would add to the burgeoning food scene on the northern Gold Coast.

Harbour Town’s Deanne Woolcock declined to say which new operators customers could expect to see in the upgrade.

“Our new tenants will bring flair and pizzazz to our evolving food corridor and take up residence next to our long established restaurants, Grill’d, Nonna’s Restaurant, Guzman Y Gomez, San Churro Chocolateria, and Yum Cha Cuisine,” she said.

“The upgrade will feature festoon lighting, contemporary paving and recycled brickwork giving the street a relaxed coastal vibe. We wanted to create a space that both locals and tourists can relax and enjoy.”

As part of the project, Reading Cinemas will also receive a facelift.

Existing restaurants, cafes and shops will stay open during construction.

Harbour Town is the latest major shopping centre to lure shoppers through “destination dining”. Pacific Fair, Robina Town Centre and Oasis Shopping Centre have launched revamped food courts in recent years.
