Euthanasia inquiry to resume as professor takes his final trip

-

A WEST Australian parliamentary inquiry into end-oflife choices resumes this week as the nation’s oldest scientist prepares to die overseas through voluntary euthanasia.

Edith Cowan University honorary research associate David Goodall doesn’t have a terminal illness but at age 104, his quality of life has deteriorated.

According to Exit International, founded by controversial euthanasia campaigner Philip Nitschke, Professor Goodall plans to travel to an assisted suicide organisation in Switzerland tomorrow.

Dr Nitschke set up a GoFundMe campaign to upgrade Prof Goodall’s ticket to business class a week ago and the $15,000 target has been exceeded.

Dr Nitschke recently told the inquiry about the ecologist’s plans, saying Western Australia’s current laws on voluntary assisted dying left him with no choice but to travel to Switzerland. The Joint Select Committee hearing the inquiry will report to parliament by August 23.

Premier Mark McGowan has already said any voluntary euthanasia laws proposed by his government would be restricted to people with a terminal illness.
