Fur flies on Straddie
NORTH Stradbroke pet owner are up in arms over a proposal to ban cats and dogs from the island in a bid to protect native wildlife.
An alliance of Straddie community groups and stakeholders have met to discuss ways to prevent further attacks on animals such as koalas and kangaroos.
The push to ban domestic pets was endorsed by the island’s traditional owners, the Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation.
The ban is being considered by the North Stradbroke Island Land Pest and Management Group, which has previously rolled out the island’s successful fox eradication program.
QYAC representatives say attacks on the island’s precious wildlife are rising, with at least 12 kangaroos killed and many injured by unrestrained dogs in the past month alone.
A QYAC spokesman said the resolution was designed to start a conversation and “all options” were on the table.
