Silver good enough for Aussies at the Games
NETBALL Australia has confirmed there will be no major review into the Diamonds’ failure to defend their Commonwealth Games title.
New Zealand announced a detailed review days after the Silver Ferns failed to win a medal at the Games for the first time.
Unlike New Zealand, which finished fourth on the Gold Coast and suffered a series of bad losses, Australia came agonisingly close to the gold medal, losing the final to England by a solitary goal.
England has been on the improve in recent years and was tipped by Australian coach Lisa Alexander to be the Diamonds’ major obstacle.
“We are extremely proud of the girls, but extremely disappointed we didn’t take the gold medal out,” Netball Australia chief executive Marne Fechner said.
“We also realise a vibrant international netball community is good for the game. We will do our standard (process) that we do post every major event – debrief and review.
“There is an opportunity to stop and learn. But there is no major review.”
Diamonds players will take the court for their clubs for the second weekend of Super Netball from Saturday.
The Magpies, beaten by the Vixens by one goal in Round 1, travel to Perth to face West Coast Fever on Saturday night.
The Giants will be chasing their second win and potentially top spot on the ladder if they can outscore the Thunderbirds in every quarter of their match in Adelaide.
On Sunday old rivalries will be reignited when the Firebirds take on Sunshine Coast.
