TAG TEAM TWINS ON WINNING STREAK

- with Andrew McKinnon

TWIN sisters Amiya and Brodie Doyle have been surfing since they were fresh out of nappies.

“Amiya and I had our first waves at Rainbow Bay on Dad’s mal,” Brodie said.

“We were around three years old. Mum says she always remembers getting down to the beach and have to quickly take our nappies off while we were both trying to run into the water.”

The Millennials are now 24 and have stepped up into club surfing big time with their power girl brand.

Last Saturday, with teammates and fellow surf twins Grace and Audrey Styman-Lane, plus Freya Prumm, the D’Bah all-girls team claimed a fourth straight national surf tag title on their home surf.

Club coach Ray “Poppy” Helton selected the winning order to help the girls create history in Global Surf Tag, formed in 2001.

“The D’Bah girls are a great team because we really don’t stress about it too much,” Amiya said.

“Poppy comes up with a magic order that we surf in and off we go.”

Brodie said: “Travelling around Australia competing with your twin sister was so much fun. We haven’t been in a contest against each other in years. That’s why these … tag teams are amazing because we are competing together in a team with three other great girls.”

Amiya agrees, saying team surfing is different than individual competition.

“For myself, surfing in a team event is a lot more my speed these days.

“I lost interest in surfing competitively a few years ago, however, surfing for my club and with the girls is what I really enjoy,” she said.

Understandably, the Doyle twins feel really fortunate growing up in a rich surfing town like Coolangatta with role models such as Steph Gilmore, Mick Fanning and Joel Parkinson.

“Watching them compete on the tour then see them out your home break and have them call you into waves is just amazing,” Brodie said.

They both work in the surfing industry, with the Shapers Company supplying all their materials and the surfing public with the many accessories.

The D’Bah girls will be back in 2019 to defend their crown and try for a fifth title, and are expecting more competition from other Australian all-girls teams.
