MULLUM MUMS HIT MARK WITH WOMEN LIKE US

- SUZANNE SIMONOT

MULLUMBIMBY rib ticklers Mandy Nolan and Ellen Briggs have spent two and half years bowling over women of all ages and rages around the country on an epic comedy roadshow.

The impact their Women Like Us stand-up tour and its message of self-acceptance has had on real women of Australia audiences inspired Nolan and Briggs to take their routine from stage to page. The duo will launch their Women Like Us book on the Gold Coast on May 24 when their 70-plus show tour ends where it all began more than two years ago — at Currumbin RSL.

Author, comedian, comedy teacher and mother of five Nolan, 50, said the book and show challenged perceptions around identity, body image and social and gender roles.

“Aside from making women laugh, we want to make women feel good about themselves,” she said.

Briggs, 48, mum to twin boys, said it was clear from audience’s reactions that women still spent too much time in “quiet selfloathing about their looks”.

“We laugh that it’s not just a comedy show — it’s a movement. It’s a movement that’s making women feel ‘normal’,” she said.

The stories the duo share touch on everything from parenting teens and mental health issues to caring for ageing parents — “the kind of issues that impact women around our age”, Nolan said.
