The incident was captured for posterity by well-known press photograph­er Tommy Campion who took a dramatic photograph of police officer Gary Hamrey arresting one of the kidnappers at gunpoint.

The incident is remembered as among the Gold Coast’s most famous crimes.

It had a happier ending than another infamous Australian kidnapping – the abduction and murder of Sydney schoolboy Graeme Thorne.

The eight-year-old’s parents won the first division of an Opera House lottery, the prize being the equivalent of around $2.8 million in today’s currency.

He was kidnapped and a ransom was demanded.

The boy’s body was discovered a month later.
