Activity on hospital site

A HIP rooftop bar will be a centrepiece of the Gold Coast’s newest hotel which will open its doors in just 18 months.

Mercure will build a fourstar hotel tower on the old Gold Coast Hospital site in Southport as part of the $550 million Queen Street Village precinct.

The exact height of the tower is unknown but it is expected to be up to 19storeys.

Mercure have announced the project will open late next year and will feature 160 rooms, conference facilities, a restaurant and bar and a rooftop bar which will overlook Southport with views to the Broadwater.

Mercure-branded cladding was placed around the 3.2ha Queen St site late last week.

Dawn Crichlow councillor said construction of the new tower was imminent.

“This is serious stuff and I spotted the site shed being delivered there in the past few days,” she said.

“This is a great development and we will welcome this project to Southport in any way we can,” she said.

“It has been many years since we have had a hotel open here.

“There is a lot of activity happening in Southport right now and this site is going to also have a shopping centre and two other unit complexes as per the development approval we have given.”

Brisbane-based developer Property Solutions received final approval from the Gold Coast City Council for the development in March.

The site will ultimately feature seven towers ranging from 16-25 storeys, a shopping centre and a retirement facility.

Southport Chamber of Commerce president Laird Marshall welcomed the work, saying it was a long time coming.

“As opposed to other projects which only might be built, this is something which is actually going to happen and it’s not just another case of landbanking,” he said.

“We still have far too many bomb sites and people trying to bail out of the Gold Coast. But this is great news and will bring more activity to that part of Southport.”
