A fresh approach to home delivery

- ALISTER THOMSON MALCOLM CAMERON

A GOLD Coast business is going up against the big players in the fresh-food delivery market — and looking to outlast them as well.

Cameron’s Kitchen is the brainchild of ex-miner Malcolm Cameron and wife Nang Cameron.

The pair have invested $250,000 in a state-of-theart kitchen in Varsity Lakes and recently rolled out 20 dinner options, which they will deliver to any Gold Coast postcode.

Mr Cameron moved to the Gold Coast four years ago after decades spent in the mining industry, working in Asia and North and South America. He said they were tired of travelling and wanted a settled family life.

They decided to look for a business and started researching the fresh-meal delivery market.

“We researched the Gold Coast and found there are 62,000 couples with children,” he said.

“In half of those households both parents work.

“We thought we would establish this business to create a solution for busy mums and dads.”

The industry competitive one.

Mr Cameron said he believed his business had a strong point of difference.

“We know we’re entering a market with strong competitors, but our research has told us frozen-meal deliveries were not appealing, and the two-to-three-day shelf life on some fresh convenience meals was, ironically, inconvenient,” Mr Cameron said.

“We cook our meals to order with no preservatives, and as soon as the meals are cooked, we use a modified atmosphere packaging tray sealer to ensure oxygen is removed from the packaging, and then snap chill them, which locks in the nutrients and creates the perfect environment so that our meals stay fresher for longer.”

Mr Cameron said the meals could be stored in the fridge for a week.

Cameron’s Kitchen is filling 50-60 orders per week.

A recent order for 18 meals was worth $190, he said.

The dinner range includes spaghetti bolognaise, chicken sate and Thai green curry.

The company will also soon launch a breakfast and lunch range and has plans to expand the current dinner menu.

Mr Cameron is confident the business can thrive in the Gold Coast market.

“Outsourcing daily jobs has become the norm — just look at the growth of Airtasker and Upwork over the past year and it is evident Australians need help at home.

“Our fresh, nutritiously balanced meals with local ingredients, are giving families back more than 10 hours a week, saving shopping, preparation and cooking time.”
