WINNERS ARE STILL OFF TARGET

- TOM BOSWELL

PALM Beach Currumbin coach Chad Owens has praised the reigning premier’s unbeaten start to the QAFL season but warned his players inaccuracy in front of goal could cost them going forward.

The Lions 12.16 (88) to 11.9 (75) win over Western Magpies on Saturday at Salk Oval was their third straight to start the season.

“It was a tough game and the Western Magpies pressure was really good,” Owens said.

“They worked the ball out really well but our speed was really important. We were able to get them on the outside later in the game.”

Palm Beach Currumbin have only kicked more goals than behinds once this season so far, in their opening game against Labrador, and Owens said it was a concerning trend that needed improving.

“We have kicked really inaccurate,” Owens said.

“We are creating opportunities which is good so we just have to make sure we keep working and hopefully we start kicking a few more. It’s more psychological than anything. Watch how tight the competition will become in the next couple of weeks after everyone plays each other. You have got to make sure you take your chances.”

Jarryd Douglas kicked 7.5 against the Magpies while midfielders Tyler Cornish and James Holland, who silenced a fast-starting Ryan Harwood with a tagging role, were among the club’s best.

Meanwhile Labrador secured their first win of the season, beating Wilston Grange 18.13 (121) to 13.14 (92) at Cooke-Murphy Oval on Saturday.

Broadbeach Cats suffered their first loss of the season, falling to Mt Gravatt 13.9 (87) to 12.7 (79) in what was the top of the table clash at Dittmer Park, and Surfers Paradise bounced back from last week’s loss to beat Sandgate 12.20 (92) to 7.6 (48) at Sir Bruce Small Park.
