Ormeau to break duck, says rival

-

TUGUN coach Clint Barends has backed Rugby League Gold Coast battlers Ormeau to snap their drought in the coming weeks.

It has been 659 days since the Shearers last won a game of A-grade footy and their difficult start to the 2018 season continued when they lost to the Seahawks 48-12 on Saturday.

Barends though said a couple of late tries had made the scoreline unrepresentative and feels victory is not far away for the competition’s northernmost team.

“They’ll win some games this year without a doubt,” he said.

“I know their coach (Julius Kuresa) looked pretty disappointed with the scoreline. I think we were the better team but probably not by that much.”

For Tugun, any win at the moment is worth its weight in gold considering they have a number of key players out including Ashley Harrison (ribs) and Rob Apanui (quad).

Savern Rapana joined the injury ward on Saturday, fracturing his foot.

“We improved this week. We weren’t much chop last week against Seagulls,” Barends said.

“We’re rebuilding and we had an opportunity to give a couple of other guys a go who had been playing reserve grade like Cooper Barrile and they have all stood up.

“That’s pleasing as well, they haven’t played much first grade and they have stepped in and been good.”

In the top of the table clash at Currumbin, the Eagles emerged victorious 30-10 over Runaway Bay.

Currumbin are now the only undefeated side after four rounds.

Tweed Heads pipped Bilambil 24-22 while Southport accounted for Burleigh 20-14.
