Region on top in state event
THE Gold Coast Tweed region has dominated the Domina BCIB Queensland State District Sides Championships, once again taking out both men’s and women’s events undefeated.
This year’s win was chalked up the Gold Coast Tweed men’s fifth successive win of the Harry Wright Memorial Shield, while the Gold Coast Tweed women picked up their fourth straight win of Val Woodward Perpetual Shield.
It was a case of deja vu for the Sunshine Coast men’s team who finished as runnersup behind the Gold Coast Tweed once again, mirroring their 2017 performance.
The host district’s women also collected runners-up honours in Division 1 following their strong performance throughout the championships.
It was yet another thrilling District Sides event (May 9 -12) with more than 500 players from 21 districts battling it out over four days of competition for the right to call themselves the best district in the state,
Unbelievably, Musgrave with Brett Wilkie
Hill’s Phil Jordan played his 540th game for the Gold Coast Tweed District at the event.
That has to be a record in Queensland.
Jordan started representing the District from Beaudesert back in the 1980s before moving to Musgrave Hill in recent years.
And how’s this for a family affair on the greens – Burleigh’s Ian Law has prevailed over his father Alan from Mudgeeraba to win the Musgrave Hill Prestige Singles.
The pair worked their way through the quality field of 128 with Ian defeating Chris Le Lievre and Alan accounting for Gary Mounsey in the semi finals, both from host club Musgrave Hill.
This event which is usually held over Easter was moved due to the Commonwealth Games and will return to Easter next year.
