Palmer back in the swing with project

- CAMPBELL GELLIE campbell.gellie@news.com.au

FORMER mining mogul and politician Clive Palmer is making public his plans to build a whole new suburb in Robina floodplain.

The Robina Transit development will be open for public comment this week.

When complete, it will be home to 3200 people.

First proposed in 2015, Robina Transit will consist of seven different-size buildings — a landmark 30-storey highrise, a 20-storey building and five 12-15-storey and seven eight-storey towers.

The development means half of the Palmer Colonial Golf Course would be transformed into a new town.

“(There will be) groundfloor residences with direct access and overlooking street-level spaces,” documents lodged by Palmer Leisure Australia show.

The 1500-page planning report has extensive flood mappings, proposed elevated roads and walk bridges over the site.

Traffic issues are also investigated and explained in the report by Burchills Engineering Solutions.

The main road into Robina Transit Centre would be through the existing Park Springs Avenue where it connects to Robina Parkway.

Robina Transit would be constructed and occupied in stages over a 25-year-period.

The Bulletin understands little progress has been made between the developer and the Gold Coast City Council since the project was filed nearly three years ago.

Council sources told the Bulletin traffic impacts and the likelihood of flooding were the main concerns about the project.

A light rail extension to Robina is believed to be essential to allowing the project to gain approval. A link has been proposed but is likely to be at least 10 years off becoming a reality.

Robina’s population grew from 20,522 in 2011 to more than 23,100 at the 2016 census.

Public comment on Mr Palmer’s development opens tomorrow and closes June 29.

Mr Palmer did not return calls for comment.
