Gold Coast Dolphins quick on the radar of Bulls selectors
TEENAGE tearaway Xavier Bartlett is desperate to repay the faith shown by Queensland Cricket hierarchy as he steps up his quest to break into the Bulls’ Sheffield Shield-winning side.
After two seasons on Queensland’s rookie list, the Gold Coast Dolphins quick has been handed his first fulltime contract following a 2017-18 campaign highlighted by two games for Australia at the Under-19 World Cup and a couple of Futures League appearances for the QAS.
Bartlett, 19, was placed on bowling restrictions in his 10 outings for the Dolphins after returning from stress fractures in his back and says QC’s backing of him will not go unrewarded.
“I’m absolutely stoked to get a full-time deal with the Bulls, especially coming off such a successful season with them winning the Shield. It’s definitely pleasing to know they’ve shown faith in me at a young age,” said Bartlett, who moved to the Coast from Adelaide at the age of 10.
“To get the upgrade was a bit of surprise.
“I didn’t really play that many games, so to have that faith is very pleasing.
“I’ve been a rookie for two years now, so I’ve had my baby learning stages.
“I’ll definitely be keen to learn (next season) but I’ll be looking to push for more second XI cricket and strong showing for the Dolphins.
“If I can get Shield selection I’ll be absolutely rapt.”
The Southport School product praised the Dolphins for their role in his development after arriving at the club in 2014-15.
“They gave me my chance in Premier Cricket when I was only 16, so they’ve definitely played a massive role.”
