Seahawks fine with small gains

THE Seahawks aren’t daring to dream of a Queensland Basketball League finals miracle just yet, with coach Robert Sleaford instead chasing smaller prizes.

North Gold Coast’s women’s side, who had dominated the second-tier SBL in recent seasons, have made a strong start to their life in the state basketball league.

Their 76-69 victory over the Phoenix on Saturday boosted their record to 2-2 ahead of a daunting north Queensland double-header.

Sleaford, though, isn’t yet thinking of doing the impossible and backing up promotion with a genuine finals tilt.

“We’re not looking too far ahead but we’re confident moving forward,” he said. “There was no target (of a number of wins) but we just want to go out there and be competitive.

“The more games we get under our belt the better we will be.”

For now, Sleaford is content with the small gains. Their laststart triumph was particularly pleasing given it was off the back of a sorry Round 2 loss to the Capitals.

“It was great after we played ordinary the week before,” he said of the team’s response.

“We played exactly how we know we can play. We’re still learning and building as a team and that showed.”

The Seahawks travel to Townsville tomorrow night (6.30pm women, 8.30pm men) before facing Cairns on Saturday (6pm, 8pm).
