SOUTHPORT GYMNASTS PRIMED FOR BIG STAGE

DYNAMIC Southport Gymnastics Club duo Ava Tyler and Jessica Cleverley have the country’s best youngsters in their sights as they prepare for the biggest moment of their careers.

Medallists at the senior state championsh­ips in Brisbane last month, the Southport pair have been chosen on the Queensland team for the Australian titles in Melbourne from May 21-26.

Competing in the Level 7 Under-13 division at the state titles, Ava won gold on the beam and bronze on the floor to finish fifth overall.

Jessica starred in the Level 8 Under-14 division, taking fifth place overall after claiming silver on the beam.

They began a three-day training camp in Brisbane yesterday, joining their Queensland teammates as they step up preparatio­ns for a national title assault.

“The girls are looking confident and well prepared and are ready to roll next week,” Queensland coach Lauren Norton said.

Ava and Jessica add to the impressive growing list of Gold Coast talent who have been nominated for the Bulletin’s Local Sports Stars awards.
