We don’t have phones during school hours at our school – students can bring them but they are kept securely at the office and only accessible to them before and after school. It works brilliantly as it’s one less battle we have to have around behaviour, appropriate use of technology and gaining their attention throughout a lesson.

Glad the school has taken this stance. Absolutely support it.

I can see no reason for kids to have the phones during school hours. Once out the gate fine. Great idea.

Well done John! Pimpama College is a leader in tackling key issues particularly bullying.

We never had them when we were at school, so I’m sure it’s not a bad idea. Kids can go to the office and use the phone in the event of an emergency and vice-versa if parents need to contact their children. My daughter has a phone but does not take it to school.

When I was in school they did the same, we could bring them but not in the class room. It’s a great descion and very fair.

My kids go to Merrimac State Primary School, they have a no phone during school policy. If a child needs a phone for pick up etc ... they have to drop them into the office

Pimpama College has improved considerably over the last few years. This is another positive initiative.

Yes kids are there to learn and part of learning is to interact with people not tapping away on their phones.

I went to a school in NSW that had this policy. You just kept it in your bag ... if you didn't use it then you didn't get it taken off you which was pretty much the same logic. You pretty much had your bag on you the entire time so risk of getting stolen was pretty much nil. Just don’t use it. Simple.

They do this at primary school, phones to the office then collect in the afternoon. Gees imagine the entire school coming to collect the phones. It will work if done right, maybe collect in the classroom when start and get when finished.

I only said this to my son the other day. I said I wish they would take those phones off you when U arrive. Then you might play a game of soccer or rugby in your lunch hour like you used to.

Fantastic! Now all schools need to do the same. If the child needs to be contacted, the school office can pass on a message. About time kids actually behaved like kids and socialised with each other in person!

Good on them! If the schools and teachers and being held responsible / accountable for bullies (as we’ve seen a lot of late) then they need to be able to choose to take whatever drastic steps necessary to stop it.

Yes good to see a school going to the effort of taking a stand to implement a consistent policy for students, the proof will be in the execution, they need to get student parents and staff to stick to it.
