HUNGRY BEAR IS ON THE HUNT FOR MORE TRIES

- CONNOR O’BRIEN @obrien_GCB

TRY-SCORING machine Troy Leo has made an irresistible case to retain his place in Burleigh’s ladderleading Intrust Super Cup line-up.

Leo has been a fringe ISC squad member since joining the Bears ahead of the 2017 season but has made his intermittent shots count.

The lightning quick winger has 15 tries from as many state league games, including five in four appearances this year.

Ordinarily, Henare Wells’ return from injury this round would have put Leo’s spot in danger but Jimmy Lenihan has instead opted to shuffle his list to fit in his finisher for tomorrow’s match against Easts at Cbus Super Stadium.

“He’s a good finisher,” coach Lenihan said.

“He certainly is playing his way into a position where I can’t leave him out.

“At the start of the year when everyone was fit, Henare was probably playing on the wing and Sami Sauiluma we were shuffling about and Jamie (Dowling) was in the centres and we had people moving all around.

“But at the moment, Troy is doing more than enough to keep his spot each week.

“It’s up to him to keep playing well but he is certainly someone with his speed who is a genuine finisher in the game and he is finding finishes where other people probably weren’t.”

Leo has a long history of being adept at finding the line, having scored 26 tries in 15 Rugby League Gold Coast A-grade games for Southport in 2016 – and chalking up 27 the year before for Northcote in the Auckland competition.
