I WAS
appalled to read in the Bulletin (‘New look for much anticipated supertower’, GCB, 25/05/18) that a 73-storey tower is planned for Surfers Paradise. This will join Ocean, Spirit, Q1 and Soul and 15 planned high rise buildings to be constructed in Broadbeach.
It is very concerning that the council seems to be ignoring the cumulative impacts on the local community and tourism of the addition of hundreds if not thousands of apartments with associated cars and stress on the beachfront.
Traffic congestion is a daily issue for locals and ultimately will be for tourists as well.
It is good that the latest building will have amenities that service locals but tourists don’t remain in one place and locals have to get to work. If this continues, the beachfront and the laidback atmosphere so touted as a reason to holiday here will be further compromised.
Tourism numbers are down and I fail to see the benefit of yet more tourist accommodation. We need more reasons for people to holiday and live here and that is not provided by a sea of high rise buildings. DIANE DAZE, SURFERS PARADISE
