GOLD Coast surfers Kyle Robinson and Mark Richardson have wound back to clock to turn on an epic show in the opening round of the Masters Surf Series in the battle for state honours.

Richardson, from Palm Beach, won the over-45 division but not before Robinson won the Air Asia “Wave of the Day” award for a front-side aerial manoeuvre in the final.

While it was a four-man final, the attention was all on Richardson and Robinson, the pair waging one of the most exciting battles of the weekend in yesterday’s final.

In 1.5m swell at Currumbin, the pair went blow for blow, with Richardson taking honours thanks to a score of 9.0 (out of a possible 10) to seal victory. “The standard at the event this year was incredible, the surfing just keeps getting better and better,” Richardson said.

“The boys out there were doing some amazing turns so I’m stoked to get the win.”

Richardson was one of seven divisional winners, getting the jump for the state title and a place at the Australian Surf Festival.

Labrador’s David McGrath showed why he is one of the best masters surfers in Queensland with a win over Damien Healy, from Broadbeach, and Currumbin’s Troy Dowker in the over-35 division.

Gold Coast board shaper Stuart Smith (Mermaid Beach) continued his form to finish first in the over-50 division ahead of Currumbin’s Chris Brooks, Nick Ryan, from Mermaid Beach, and Clive Sinton, from Moffat Beach.
