TWEED’S SIX APPEAL

- CONNOR O’BRIEN @obrien_GCB

“HE’S the one that makes me look good.”

It wasn’t Kane Elgey’s finest display but the influence of the high-profile halfback is being appreciated at Tweed Heads, who yesterday held off Sunshine Coast 18-12 for their sixth straight win.

Elgey declined a postmatch interview but teammates were more than willing to praise the 42-game Titan.

Second-rower Lamar Liol-evave was awarded players’ player but handed all credit – including the above quote – to Elgey, his partner in crime on the left edge.

“He brings a lot of experience to our team and just the organisation from Kane helps out the team so much,” he said.

While Tweed have lost the spark of AJ Brimson to the Titans’ No.6 jersey, they have been boosted by Elgey’s guidance according to Seagulls five-eighth Lindon McGrady.

“He’s a good organiser and we just play off one another. He’s a professional,” he said.

Elsewhere in Tweed’s NRL contingent, Ryan Simpkins was reliable as ever, Brendan Elliot scored two tries and came up with a match-saving tackle but it was prop Leilani Latu who shone in front of Titans coach Garth Brennan and co-owner Darryl Kelly.

Latu, who has spent the past two months trying to win an NRL recall, responded sensationally to a rev-up from Seagulls coach Ben Woolf.

The former Panther was dangerous in attack and aggressive

in defence, at one point flattening Sunshine Coast pivot Rhys Jacks with the hit of the year.

“I had a chat to him last week about stepping up his game and showing that he is first grade material and he agreed that he probably needed to be a bit better,” Woolf said. “I thought he played his best game last week; he was probably even better (yesterday).”

Tweed will be sweating on scan results for centre Brayden McGrady, who injured his knee just days after signing for Penrith from 2019.
