Stop persecuting elderly and allow them to choose a dignified end

-

WHY are police targeting elderly, sick people in their homes, sometimes at midnight asking questions about what they have ordered via the internet (‘Dead of night doorknock’, GCB, 29/5/’18). Is it about to become illegal to order goods this way? If so Australia has really gone down hill.

These elderly people are being asked the question and if they happen to say yes then the item is confiscated. The item I am talking about is a drug that vets use to euthanase our pets, to give them the respect of a peaceful death to end their suffering. After all animal owners would be prosecuted if they did not give their pets this right. So why can’t we have that same right? The elderly want nothing more than the same thing and who is going to deny them that? Police of course.

Why are the authorities so hell bent in stopping them from having the peaceful death at a time of their choosing, when they are too sick or just too tired of living with pain to go on. After all it is not illegal to suicide. To die with their family around them and be able to say goodbye to them is all they ask. It seems the authorities are happy to let these people hang themselves, or jump in front of a train or bus, traumatising everyone around and the ambulance people who have to pick up the mess of what was once someone’s grandparent.

Why is this vendetta going on I am asking? What is so wrong to want to die peacefully at home with family?

Why do they have to sneakily order this drug on the internet, hoping it doesn’t get confiscated by customs, then live in fear of a policeman knocking on their door, sometimes at midnight, to ask questions. Where has our freedom gone? Why are they reduced to having do this? After all the drug was freely able to be bought over the counter once and the ad said, I quote: “Give your child a teaspoon of this to help them sleep if they are being fractious”.

This is surely an abominable thing to target our sick, elderly people this way and we all should be very angry. The police obviously do not have anything better to do with their time. We keep hearing in the media there are not enough men and women in uniform and they need more so why give them stupid tasks like this to do? Go out and target the morons who are hell bent on killing our youth by selling them hard drugs.

It is time the authorities got off their backsides and allow our doctors to administer this drug as and when it is required. After all our sick, elderly people will only be using it for their own death so what reason do they have for not allowing it? Come on Australia, let’s help our elderly and campaign for everyone who wants it to have a peaceful death, it is HUMANE and our right.

I am asking Australians to step up and lobby your local member to put an end to the harassment our elderly are getting just to enable them to have the peaceful death they seek. I realise it is not everybody’s choice to choose euthanasia which is fine, if you don’t want it for yourself then at least allow those that do to have that right.

A good example of how resources are being squandered is the case of Suzy Austin in NZ, where the elderly were having a private meeting in Suzy’s house to discuss options. The police set up a road block outside with the sole intention of getting names and addresses, then calling to the home of each of the elderly to question them. Then taking Suzy to the High Court to try and prosecute her. Shame on you police.

Is this going to happen here? I pray not. I call it victimisation. Thank goodness other countries are not so blindly arrogant. They allow Voluntary Euthanasia. Come on Australia get with the times and let’s get back to being civilised. Allow those who want it have it.
