BRAVE DANIEL LAPS UP COLD SNAP AS OTHERS SHIVER

- KATE PARASKEVOS kate.paraskevos@news.com.au

THE city is set to shiver in a four-day cold snap as overnight temperatures reach as low as 7 degrees.

But even though the mercury will plummet into single digits overnight, that will not stop Daniel Steensma from Surfers Paradise from swimming laps in the Evandale Lake in the mornings.

In fact, he’s been doing it everyday for 18 years, despite the weather – or the temperature.

The only time the keen swimmer couldn’t do his daily laps was when Council emptied the lake to flush out poisonous stonefish last year.

“It’s a free workout and you don’t have to worry about bumping into anyone else while you swim,” the 71year-old said.

“When it gets really cold, I will put on a wetsuit if I get a headache when my head touches the water, but I try to put it off as long as I can.”

Mr Steensma has lived on the Coast for 23 years after leaving Holland at 9-yearsold to live in New Zealand, before crossing the ditch to live on the Gold Coast.

So although he is used to the cold, he might want to bust out that wetsuit sooner rather than later as peak temps hit the low 20s and overnight temps struggle to hit double digits.

A Bureau of Meteorology spokesman said while there would be little rain for the Coast, locals could expect some chilly overnight temps, despite the Coast’s usual sunny days.

The next four days will bring a cold snap overnight, with temps averaging between 7 and 8 degrees.
